The Pirie One Storey Lofthome

DESIGN GOALS

Pearl and Brian Pirie wanted "a house to suit our lifestyle -- clean, simple, uncluttered informal living areas surrounded by trees in an undisturbed natural landscape" and also wanted "high quality construction, materials and design."

FEATURES

The Piries carefully sited the house to have the great room facing south and to nestle the house in the surrounding trees. They replaced the two-car detached garage with a one-car garage within the plate of the house to disturb as few trees as possible.

In the Pirie House, informal living and dining areas are combined in a great room with 18' instead of 11' ceilings and a second floor overlook from a gallery. A ground floor study doubles as a guest room with an adjacent powder room. The shape of the ceilings inside the great room and over the stairs follows the shape of the roof, connecting the inside and outside of the house. The second floor is more private with a master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and sitting area. Knee walls and sloped ceilings create a cozy and intimate space which contrasts with the dramatic volume of the downstairs great room. An additional skylight in the master bedroom brings even more light and views of trees.

The standard One Storey Lofthome is 1,296 s.f., expandable to 1,716 s.f. with the loft, with 9' ceilings in the bedroom areas and 11' or optional 18' ceilings in the great room. A 480 s.f. two-car garage is attached or detached. The Pirie House is 1,536 s.f. with a finished loft and single car garage within the plate of the house.
