The Butler House
DESIGN GOALS Matt Butler wanted "a comfortable house that combined natural materials with distinctive architecture, and an open design that merged with the surrounding forest and felt part of nature". FEATURES The Butler House takes full advantage of its wooded lot. The kitchen and second floor studio windows look down the farm lane. Maples and spruce protect the northern exposure and the southern exposure faces an open meadow. It has horizontal 8' windows, with a stucco exterior and steel roof. The entrance, clad with cedar, welcomes guests through the trees from the communal farm lane and street, and introduces the cherry and maple wood finishes inside. Inside, the galley kitchen is U-shaped off the great room. The cherry-lined powder room is placed in the great room. The light metal handrail and maple stairs reinforce the modern aesthetic. The niches above the fireplace echo the design of the windows, and the windows define the shape of the hearth. The design of the powder room, stairs and fireplace bring an architectural focus to the changes from the standard design. The maple kitchen cabinetry built by Randy Kerr, an Almonte cabinetmaker and craft artist, has simple lines and a honey finish. A second floor studio with an 8' x 8' dormer window is a virtual treehouse. An ensuite bathroom provides a view from the glass-enclosed shower through south facing windows into the surrounding trees. A home office opens into the studio. The Butler House is 1,875 s.f. with 9' ceilings downstairs and 10' ceilings upstairs. A 480 s.f. two car garage is on the ground floor.
